The Sea Fairies // Collaboreads {a vintage read}

This month’s Collaboreads topic with Kristin and Rachel was a vintage read and I just so happened to be sitting on a copy of The Sea Fairies by L. Frank Baum that fit perfectly- this title was first published in 1911!
The Sea Fairies // Collaboreads {a vintage read}
Amazon Synopsis:
Best-known for his beloved "Oz" stories, L. Frank Baum also fabricated other realms of fantasy for his young readers. In The Sea Fairies, he takes youngsters to visit one of those fascinating places — a kingdom deep beneath the sea. Leading the way are Trot, a very independent and immensely curious little girl, and Cap'n Bill, an old sailor who likes to tell tall tales.

One day the two adventurers come upon a sea cave where they discover a school of bewitching mermaids who guide them beneath the waves to a magnificent palace. While touring this mysterious watery realm, Trot and Cap'n Bill meet an aristocratic codfish and a bashful octopus, attend an elegant banquet, are taken prisoner by an awesome sea monster, make a dash for freedom, and have loads of other adventures.
Sure to tickle the curiosity and delight the imagination, this enchanting fantasy, enhanced with 78 of John R. Neill's imaginative original drawings, will charm Baum fans of all ages.

Riveting:
Details about the world under the sea and the creatures (real and imaginative) was written beautifully and believable which makes for a good fantasy read.

Elements:
Baum creates such enduring characters. Trot and Cap'n Bill are a sweet pair, and remind me of when I was growing up and spending time with my Papa; they have that young/old, yin/yang aspect.

Associate:
I'm a bit embarrassed by this but the TV series Mako Mermaids (which is doubly shaming as I don't allow Kinsey to watch this show anymore and yet it still comes to mind, haha.) I could also see this being a Jim Henson production in the vein of The Labyrinth.

Design:
I've read the entire Oz series but didn't know Baum had written others (call me a lazy researcher) but when I saw this book at a local used book store (for half off!) I got very excited. Having a mermaid on the cover just sweetened the deal.

Stars:
3 out of 5. It was entertaining but fell short of the magic within the Oz series.

A life, celebrated

It's been a week since my Papa passed away. I think about him all the time. He is sorely missed. My Papa was the best.
A life, celebrated
He was my father figure. He taught me how to ride a bike. He bought me my first pair of roller blades and would skate around the neighborhood with me.

Every time he went shopping at Costco he would bring me back a gift, a book, a movie or a game. If I was lucky enough to go with him we would treat me to lunch from the cart- a polish dog with deli mustard and sauerkraut.

He shared the things he loved with me. Classical music (I adore Vivaldi), doing puzzles (jigsaws and Wonder Word), reading. He delighted in watching the sun set. The ocean held a special place in his heart.

He made the best beef stew. It was made with love. Everything he did was with love.

He had the best sense of humor and was never afraid to be silly.

He drove me to swim practice. And to my first job. I don’t remember what we talked about specifically, but I could tell him anything.

I miss hearing his voice. I miss seeing him smile.
A life, celebrated
Gary grew up in Essen, Germany and was the first born son to Emma and Horace. He had a younger brother, Otto. They were raised on a farm and helped in the fields. He was recruited into the German army and became a prisoner of war. After his release he traveled to Canada and then motorcycled into California. He met and married Joanne in Los Angeles in 1965. A daughter, Denise was born in 1966. He owned and operated a Bavarian Delicatessen, was a contractor to the city and could fix all the things. There is much I don’t know about my Papa but what I do know I will keep close.

I feel like I have so much more to say about him and yet the words aren't flowing.

Christmas gifts with TurnGram

I am the worst at printing out my pictures. Anyone else? I am sitting on a backlog of pictures from 2014- that's two kids worth of pictures that have ever seen the inside of a frame. If you were to visit my house, you'd think we only have Kinsey because she's the only one who is printed, hung and displayed. Talk about mom guilt.

Book Drop // The {August/September/October} Book Report

Well, I hope you need a bunch of book recommendations because I have been seriously behind on sharing my reads (just blame it on baby snuggles ;) Here we go!

August
Goodbye, Vitamin by Rachel Khong

Goodread Synopsis:
"Goodbye, Vitamin is the wry, beautifully observed story of a woman at a crossroads, as Ruth and her friends attempt to shore up her father's career; she and her mother obsess over the ambiguous health benefits - in the absence of a cure - of dried jellyfish supplements and vitamin pills; and they all try to forge a new relationship with the brilliant, childlike, irascible man her father has become."

Thoughts:
This novel hits close to home as my papa has Alzheimer's but instead of being filled with dread and sadness, this filled me with hope and happiness. I shared this with my gramma and she enjoyed it too. Khong writes beautifully! I will definitely keep my eyes open for more of her work.

A Court of Thorns & Roses by Sarah J. Maas

Goodreads Synopsis:
"Feyre's survival rests upon her ability to hunt and kill – the forest where she lives is a cold, bleak place in the long winter months. But to do so, she must kill the predator and killing something so precious comes at a price ...

Dragged to a magical kingdom for the murder of a faerie, Feyre discovers that her captor, his face obscured by a jewelled mask, is hiding far more than his piercing green eyes would suggest. Feyre's presence at the court is closely guarded, and as she begins to learn why, her feelings for him turn from hostility to passion and the faerie lands become an even more dangerous place. Feyre must fight to break an ancient curse, or she will lose him forever."

Thoughts:
My good friend insisted I read these two series by Maas and even though Im a big Disney fan, I usually dont read Fantasy. Well, I couldnt believe how much I enjoyed these!! Its filled with conflict, drama, romance and humor. This first book reminded me of Beauty and the Beast.

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas
Goodreads Synopsis:
"After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin.

Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king's council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she'll serve the kingdom for four years and then be granted her freedom. Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilarating. But she's bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her ... but it's the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.

Then one of the other contestants turns up dead ... quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined."

Thoughts:
Not as good as The Court Series but filled with adventure.

Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas

Goodreads Synopsis:
"A line that should never be crossed is about to be breached.

It puts this entire castle in jeopardy—and the life of your friend."

"From the throne of glass rules a king with a fist of iron and a soul as black as pitch. Assassin Celaena Sardothien won a brutal contest to become his Champion. Yet Celaena is far from loyal to the crown. She hides her secret vigilantly; she knows that the man she serves is bent on evil.

Keeping up the deadly charade becomes increasingly difficult when Celaena realizes she is not the only one seeking justice. As she tries to untangle the mysteries buried deep within the glass castle, her closest relationships suffer. It seems no one is above questioning her allegiances—not the Crown Prince Dorian; not Chaol, the Captain of the Guard; not even her best friend, Nehemia, a foreign princess with a rebel heart.

Then one terrible night, the secrets they have all been keeping lead to an unspeakable tragedy. As Celaena's world shatters, she will be forced to give up the very thing most precious to her and decide once and for all where her true loyalties lie... and whom she is ultimately willing to fight for."

Thoughts:
This one was a bit darker (and continues with each subsequent novel in the series)

Thoughts:
I actually finished this book in the hospital after giving birth to Clark and this was my exact expression when I realized this was not the last book in the series ðŸ˜± Yes, the story is getting better but I still have some trouble believing an uneducated teenager is the answer to everyone's problems here...

A Million Junes by Emily Henry

Goodreads Synopsis:
"For as long as Jack “June” O’Donnell has been alive, her parents have had only one rule: stay away from the Angert family. But when June collides—quite literally—with Saul Angert, sparks fly, and everything June has known is thrown into chaos.

Who exactly is this gruff, sarcastic, but seemingly harmless boy who has returned to their hometown of Five Fingers, Michigan, after three mysterious years away? And why has June—an O’Donnell to her core—never questioned her late father’s deep hatred of the Angert family? After all, the O’Donnells and the Angerts may have mythic legacies, but for all the tall tales they weave, both founding families are tight-lipped about what caused the century-old rift between them.

As Saul and June’s connection grows deeper, they find that the magic, ghosts, and coywolves of Five Fingers seem to be conspiring to reveal the truth about the harrowing curse that has plagued their bloodlines for generations. Now June must question everything she knows about her family and the father she adored, and she must decide whether it’s finally time for her—and all the O’Donnells before her—to let go."

Soooo good! Reminded me of Alice Hoffman's whimsical writing and we all know how I adore me some Hoffman.
