We had a slight dusting of snow recently and it was the catalyst for our new homeschool unit. Preschool activities have been very seasonally focused this school year and I find it keeps us attuned to nature in a deeper way.
To help encourage more fine motor movement, I whipped up a batch of "snow dough" using cornstarch in place of flour (a very first for me) and coconut oil instead of vegetable oil to help preserve the white color. Boy it sure smells good! (It also leaves your hands feeling silky smooth!) Plus we added a couple of drops of peppermint essential oil, creating a sensory smorgasbord.
This dough comes together fast!
Snow Dough recipe:
1 cup cornstarch
1/2 cup salt
1 TBSP cream of tartar
1 TBSP coconut oil, melted
1 cup boiling water
1-2 drops essential oil of choice, optional
Mix all ingredients together in a sauce pan over medium heat. Stir continuously until a soft dough forms into a ball. Remove from heat and let cool before playing. The more you play with it the better the texture. Store in a plastic bag or container. Can last for a couple of weeks.
Have fun!
It was too bright to allow Laurel to fully open her eyes but she was amazed by the soft falling flakes and the chill air!
