Welcome to Summer School! We're happy to have Stephanie guest host this month for Teaching Together Blog Hop!
Confession time! I think I have a problem. I've been bitten by the gardening bug. Like, no joke, I am addicted to buying new plants; be it edible or decorative. Thankfully I had a legit reason to buy more when Kinsey decided she wanted to learn about Hummingbirds. And this project came into fruition.
I first went on a Google search to find plants that attract hummingbirds. Our area hosts several different kinds of hummingbirds including Allen's and Anna's, broad-tailed, blue-throated and black-chinned. But if you ask me, the ones with green shiny feathers are what we see most often ;)
Plants that attract Hummingbirds:
(and bonus, butterflies!)
Bee balm, Begonias, Butterfly bush
Columbine, Coral bells
Foxglove
Garden phlox
Hibiscus, Holy hock, Honeysuckle
Iris
Lantana, Lily, Lupine
Marigolds
Oriental Poppy
Peony, Petunias
Red Hot Poker
Sage, Salvia, Snapdragon
Verbena
Zinnias
We chose marigolds, salvia and violas which remind me of pansies which are one of my favorite flowers (thank you, animated Alice in Wonderland) and I was looking for snapdragons but the OSH we were at had none, sad face. (Another favorite flower!)
My method for planting was very scientific, put the purple one in the middle and plant around it. The salvia is supposed to grow taller than the marigolds so that will look lovely once it starts getting height. (Love the bubble bomb, hehe.)
My sweet helper. You should have seen her at the Garden Store. She was jumping in the puddles left by the watering system, sniffing blooms and just racing all over the place. Her excited was contagious. Then we get home and it's, "that's o.k Mom, I'll just watch." Thanks kid. We finished it off with a decorative border of pink pebbles and voila!
Disregard the dirt in the background. It houses my asparagus roots, but I have a feeling those suckers are not going to do a thing. Thank goodness they were only $5 at WalMart.
And that's our Hummingbird Garden! It is so sweet to see out on the patio and though I have yet to see a Hummingbird visit it, I know it's just a matter of time.
Now it's your turn! Thanks for joining Amanda, Beth, Courtney, Courtney, Stephanie and me for the first installment of Summer School! Our next TTBH Summer School link up will be on Thursday, June 7th and Meghan will be our new guest host!
Awww...that garden is so beautiful and colorful! I love it and such a great idea. Hummingbirds are so fun to watch. I hope they loves this, so you get lots of a bird watching. :) I totally thought this post was next week. :( Dangit!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know hummingbirds were attracted to specific flowers... I learned something new today! And I can totally see Noah taking an observing role once the actual planting started!
ReplyDeleteI hope you see a hummingbird soon! Your garden turned out so cute.
ReplyDeleteAny tricks on how to keep the flowers alive? I can plant all day but keeping things alive is a skill I lack.
ReplyDeleteI love this!!!! I love even more that you have been bitten by the gardening bug! So much fun right?!
ReplyDeleteP.s. often asparagus doesn't do much until the second growing season, so don't give up hope just yet!
Oh this is awesome!!! We just planted begonias and salvia in our pots around the house so maybe we'll see a hummingbird soon too!
ReplyDeleteHummingbirds are so cool. I haven't seen one in ages. Hopefully you get a few to stop by!
ReplyDeleteI love how colorful it is! My MIL is a gardener and we see lots of hummingbirds in her back yard. They are so tiny and interesting to watch!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! My dad has so many hummingbirds at his farm, but I've never seen one anywhere close to our house. We might have to try this and see if they find it! I'd love to have some around.
ReplyDeleteSo pretty! I just love hummingbirds (I always keep our feeder full), so i'm happy to hear that I already have lots of those attracting flowers in my garden!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! We have so many hummingbirds in our area, and I have no idea what they are attracted to. But, I don't hate it. I also don't hate the number of butterflies we see as well. I hope something flittery (I think I just made up a word??) and pretty makes its way to your garden soon!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun project! I hope the Hummingbirds come to visit!
ReplyDeleteWe finally saw one on Friday! Set the tone for a wonderful weekend ;)
DeleteWe have a hummingbird that we've seen a few times, unfortunately we haven't seen him recently! Love the picture of the two of you!
ReplyDeleteOh how I love this! Hummingbirds are such interesting creatures. I always put out hummingbird feeders, but they prefer our bush we have. Great photos!
ReplyDeleteI love planting too and have even managed to sneak a few flowers into the vegetable garden.
ReplyDeleteGardening has become such a wonderful hobby! It's like having a bunch of green, edible babies to look after lol
DeleteI love so many of those flowers! I'm not sure if we get any hummingbirds here in Ontario but they are such a cool bird!
